The story follows Dorian Gray , a young man whose stunning beauty captures the painter Basil Hallward , who creates a portrait of him. Influenced by the hedonistic philosophy of Lord Henry Wotton , Dorian wishes that his portrait would age instead of him, allowing him to remain forever young. His wish mysteriously comes true—while he indulges in a life of sin and excess, his portrait bears the marks of his moral corruption.
As Dorian sinks deeper into a life of selfish pleasure, his actions lead to destruction, including the deaths of those around him. Overcome with guilt, he ultimately attempts to destroy the painting, but in doing so, he meets his own tragic end.
The novel is a dark reflection on vanity, the consequences of unchecked desires, and the true nature of beauty and morality.
